elist_logoWASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women candidates, endorsed Senator Joyce Woodhouse and Nevada State Senate candidates Tammy Peterson and Allison Edwards in Nevada.

“Joyce Woodhouse, Tammy Peterson, and Allison Edwards are effective leaders who will make a positive difference for the state of Nevada,” said Jonathan Parker, Political Director of EMILY’s List. “They are dedicated to social justice, creating economic growth and opportunity and will continue the push for a fair and equitable Nevada. Woodhouse, Peterson, and Edwards are dedicated advocates for their communities and we are thrilled to support their campaigns.”

As a Nevada State Senator in Clark District 5, Joyce Woodhouse, a former teacher and principal, established herself as a powerful advocate for Nevada's schools and children.  She has fought to protect public education from drastic funding cuts, worked to reduce class sizes, and provided students with early childhood education.  Most recently, Senator Woodhouse led a bi-partisan effort to allow Nevada to compete for up to $175 million in federal funds for Nevada's education system under the "Race to the Top" program.

Tammy Peterson, candidate for Clark District 8, is a product of the Nevada public school system and a former prosecutor for the Clark County District Attorney's Special Victims Unit where she focused on cases of child sexual abuse, assault, and child homicide.  Tammy is a 2007 graduate of EMERGE Nevada, a non-profit organization of Democratic women who are dedicated to a representative democracy.  Tammy is now a litigation partner at Jones Vargas.

Allison Edwards, running for State Senate in Washoe County District 2, is a tireless advocate for putting a stop to domestic violence. As a Domestic Violence Prevention Advocate on the Board of Directors for Safe Embrace in Reno, Allison worked to provide intervention and prevention services to victims of abuse.  The organization established emergency shelters for abused women and children, and recently expanded to provide services to include incarcerated women.  Allison is an AmeriCops alumnus, former high school teacher, and mother.

Along with the EMILY's List endorsement, these candidates have the support of the Nevada Conservation League, the Nevada State Education Association, Nevada State AFL-CIO, and the Professional Fire Fighters of Nevada, among others.

EMILY's List's Political Opportunity Program (POP) helps pro-choice Democratic women run and win for state and local office. Since the program started in 2001, POP has helped elect hundreds of women across the country.

EMILY's List is the nation's largest resource for women candidates. In the 2007-2008 cycle, EMILY's List raised more than $43 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, helping them build strong campaigns, and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 80 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 15 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to the state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
