Fighting for Nevada's Children |
As a teacher, principal, and program administrator, I dedicated my life to making sure every child had an opportunity to succeed. As your State Senator, I have spent the past two years fighting to keep our schools the best they can be. Nevada can not continue to be a state of hope and opportunity, if our children do not get a good education.
Today we are facing tough times. Jobs are disappearing as well as many of the tourist based tax dollars on which we depend. We are at a crossroads. But, I believe we must face the future with courage and competence, because it is our moral responsibility to leave our children a state in better shape than we found it.
That means we need a plan to put Nevadans back to work, protect our schools, and restore faith in state government. The people of this state work hard, and they deserve a state government that works just as hard for them.
Clean energy = a better future We have a unique opportunity to put Nevadans back to work and create a cleaner Nevada for our children. Investing in a “Green Job” economy is a two for one – we will create a more stable economy, and we will invest in making the planet cleaner and safer for a brighter future. We can put people to work by building renewable energy plants. This includes creating tax incentives for private industry and developing public-private partnerships to build renewable energy plants. We can also change building standards and zoning laws to give green incentives to builders and contractors.
Protecting and strengthening our schools We can not fix our current budget problems on the backs of our children. We must balance the budget responsibly and not cut funding for education. We must also do more to make schools more productive places, such as reducing class sizes. And we must find ways to increase teacher salaries and demand higher performance. I have made education my number one priority during this session, and I promise to make our schools the best they can be—you have my word on that.
Getting rid of corruption in government Somehow things got flipped around—those who break the rules too often get ahead, while those of us who work hard and play by the rules struggle. I want to restore fairness to the system so that people have faith in their government. That begins with creating a new ethics commission that is an independent body not controlled by the legislature or the executive branch. Nevada remains one of the only states in the country without laws like this.
Nevada is a terrific place to call home. I am proud to have lived in Nevada for most of my life and to be your State Senator. If you want to know more about my record, please visit the legislation section of this site. You can also call me in Henderson at 702-307-9008.
